How cloud is influencing the roles and responsibilities of CIO?

Cloud has had a gigantic effect on the software industry. And its impact on CIO’s roles and responsibilities is dominant. With the cloud technology, CIO is no more just a keeper of the technology but a Chief of Information in all sense, managing the sensitive company data as an organization asset. In order to keep the data secure, CIO not only has to know the whereabouts of data and the cloud provider but has to dive in deeper. The CIO is responsible from choosing the best cloud vendor with the given budget to keeping an eye on who is accessing which part of data.

An intricate task at hand

The cloud technology has brought out an all together different angle to the CIOs roles. It is a challenge for the CIOs to select the best in market cloud provider, migrate all the systems smoothly over the cloud and have all cloud data backup which ensures seamless operations in case of any cyber attack.

CIOs need to plan extensive testing and monitoring plans in order to always be in the position where the risk is minimized and data is not compromised. With the constant updates and new features from the cloud providers, this becomes a bigger challenge.

Changes in the Communication Structure

Unlike the old top-down communication and management structures, with the innovation of cloud and other modern technologies needs to be revised. All individual employees today have access to lots of websites to perform their research and implement the best. CIOs can exploit this cloud feature in order to incorporate a friendlier environment where an employee’s suggestions are taken seriously, eventually building a team spirit within the organization.

Change is surely difficult but is inevitable and with an organization having all employees as a team, transitioning will be smoother and profitable.

CIOs need to assist CEOs

According to Gartner’s 2017 survey of CEOs, 47% CEOs say they are being challenged by boards of directors to make progress in digital business.

“CIOs should help CEOs set the success criteria for digital business,” said Mark Raskino, vice president and Gartner Fellow. “It starts by remembering that you cannot scale what you do not quantify, and you cannot quantify what you do not define. You should also ask yourself: What is ‘digital’ for us? What kind of growth do we seek? What’s the No. 1 metric and which KPIs must change?”

In today’s era for a digital transformation, a cloud-based infrastructure has become a need. Cloud technology is the one which is used even for Artificial Intelligence as well as Internet of Things (IOT). Hence CIOs must step forward to transform the organization’s infrastructure to cloud.
